It was thought this would be a foregone conclusion with Derby winner Ellington made the odds-on favourite. However, in the end he dropped away tamely to beat only one home, leaving Warlock to win by an easy 2 lengths in 3 minutes 25 seconds. The winner was an accomplished horse, winning the Great Ebor Stakes at York in 1856 and the Great Yorkshire Plate at Doncaster in 1857 as well as the Queen's Plate. Over Round 104%
